Netflix gave us endless streaming choice, now using AI to narrow it down

Netflix thinks AI is the solution to those evenings of endless scrolling when trying to figure out what to watch. The streaming service has introduced a new AI Discover tab, which will host a number of new features it believes will help you cut to the chase and hit play on a new show or movie.

The first feature to appear under the AI Discover tab, which is available for a small number of users at present, begins with viewers telling Netflix what they’re in the mood for.

Users will start with one of the suggested themes (like Something Light, or Scare Me), then be offered a number of options based upon the them. Users can also “go deeper” and see more specific themes or use the “Tune Your Recommendations” button to prevent particular titles being suggested again.

Netflix says there’ll be a number of AI test features appearing under this banner, with some making it into the main app if they prove successful

“What we’re most excited about is how it feels to use,” Netflix says in a blog post. “Tell us what you’re after, and the experience adjusts. Tell us a recommendation isn’t for you, and we’ll remember it in AI Discover, so it won’t keep turning up. AI Discover is powered by a new intelligence layer we’ve been building that responds to what members tell us in real time and keeps learning.

“Think of AI Discover as our test kitchen: we’re trying out new recipes for discovery, and your use and feedback help us decide which ones to keep, improve, or serve up next. Some may even make their way into the main Netflix experience.”

It’s coming to US viewer initially with supported TVs. Those with access will see it in the top navigation menu
