The standard Sony PlayStation 5 games console currently costs $650/£569. For the standard PS6, the memory components alone will cost Sony $680 (around £510) according to a new report. That’s pretty bad news if you had visions of acquiring a next-generation machine for under a grand.
A post by a trusted leaker on the NeoGAF (via VCG) forums suggests Sony will have to push the boat out to grab the “RAM + NAND alone” for the machine expected to launch in a couple of years time, but perhaps as late as 2029. The leaker, who posts under the name Kepler L2, has had accurate insight into AMD matters in the past.
Naturally an increase in component costs is expected. It’s down to the current RAM and storage crisis gripping the technology world, driven by the need for components to power AI data centres. However, the figures posted this weekend are eye-opening to say the least.
Given the CPU needs, other costs R&D costs, manufacturing, marketing, distribution, and so forth, it’s difficult to imagine Sony taking enough of a loss not he console to offer the PS6 for under a thou whatever way you want to slice the currencies.
That view was echoed by Aldora CEO Joost van Dreunen told gamesindustry.biz that: “At this rate, the next generation may not even release until 2028, and when it does, north of a grand is the floor. Even existing devices are getting marked up.”
Sony has already pushed the PS5 and PS5 Pro prices up well beyond the 2020 asking prices due to the shortages. However, right now we’re looking at a PS6 console that might cost at least twice as much as its predecessor. It’s little wonder the company is cutting the physical disc drive from the console, much to the chagrin of some users!
