Apple’s forthcoming smart home products – reportedly build in partnership with LG – could appear within the iPhone’s Dynamic Island when the user is in close proximity, perhaps offering an even shorter cut to easy control.
That’s according to new analysis from the code-watcher ‘pdfu’ who claims to have discovered a proximity control feature within a revamped Home proposition. Similarly to the way an iPhone responds to proximity to the HomePod, users could see a shortcut to the smart home device within the Home ecosystem.
For a thermostat, for instance, tapping the indicator in the Dynamic Island could take users straight to the temperature controls without having to enter the home app. Considering Apple is said to be working on a temperature sensor, which would be placed elsewhere in the house, this could be really useful.
Say you’re lying in bed and sense it’s getting a bit warm, a quick tap on the Dynamic Island could help you lower the temp a bit. Same if you’re leaving the house and want to quickly ensure the bolt is locked.
Pdfu wirtes:
Behind the scenes, the accessory writes an “apple-deviceid” in the Matter payload stored on its NFC tag that helps iOS identify it when tapped. It also broadcasts a Bluetooth Low Energy advert for Apple Proximity Control.
In the current implementation, the enabled state is equivalent to Ask to Launch. Home’s helper text reads: “Show controls when you bring your iPhone near your [accessory].” The feature is still in active development across beta releases, so the final behaviour may change.
Apple may reveal the first wave of so-called second party LG-made smart home products during an event on October 13. Those three products are expected following the exposure of FCC regulatory submission, but cameras are also thought to be on tap.
Apple is also planning to launch a new Apple TV 4K, ‘HomePad’ Smart Display and new HomePod mini all fitted with the new Siri AI assistant.
