iPhone Duo Display Crack Latest: Apple acknowledges small number of issues, others speculate over cause

Apple has responded to early reports of iPhone Duo owners suffering from broken displays, within the first few hours of busting open the foldable phone.

On Friday – the day the iPhone Duo finally went on sale – a small number of early adopters reported a crack along the inner display and the hinge. One user who posted his experience to Reddit says Apple sorted a replacement immediately and was keen to get the model.

Images posted online seemed to show the issue manifest in the same way, from the bottom of the hinge, about a third of the way up, and then across to the right side of the screen. Now Apple’s media team has weighed in with an official statement, advising users to contact AppleCare if they suffer a similar fate.

A company representative told 9to5Mac: “The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”

It’s not uncommon for brand new devices to suffer from some manufacturing defects right out of the gate. Apple bringing the devices back to the mothership helps the company clean-up the issues ahead of the next production runs.

Apple didn’t say what was causing the issues, as you’d expect. However, in its teardown iFixit did speculate over what might have happened. The experts used a complex combination of CT scans, footage from the teardown, and patent filings from Apple to come up with a 3D model of the hinge. iFixit suggested that the support bar may not be retracting properly when the device is folded and that could be putting too much pressure on the display. It’s educated speculation, but the best theory we’ve got until Apple confirms otherwise.
