Apple added OLED displays to two of its legacy products this week; the iPad mini and the MacBook Pro, joining the existing iPhone and iPad Pro models with the advanced display technology. It is also thought the OLED display could come to the iPad Air in 2027.
However, the company is also considering bringing OLED to iMac desktop computers in the future, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Speaking on the Power On podcast, which is becoming a weekly source of intriguing Apple tidbits, the in-the-know reporter said the iMac could be Apple’s next OLED upgrade project.
“They are looking at an OLED iMac, that I can tell you as well, but I still think that’s a few years away. Okay, so maybe that’s the next big change,” Gurman said on the Podcast.
Apple revealed a new iMac this week, which runs the new M6 processors. However it is otherwise identical to the previously released M4 version, which has a 24-inch 4.5K Retina LCD display with a 60Hz display.
It could absolutely use an upgrade to OLED technology for those more vivid colours and deeper, purer blacks. However, an improvement to the display technology could also see an increase in price. The additional of an OLED screen added hundreds to the price of the base MacBook Pro. It’s a tough needle to thread, particularly with the RAM crisis.
