Ever wanted to appear in your favourite PlayStation games? Well, Sony just started a programme that enables gamers’ likenesses to be scanned and inserted within the action.
The new initiative is called Playerbase and PlayStation gamers can submit an application from today. After a shortlist is made, there’ll be video interviews and one lucky winner will be invited to LA for a “scanning day” and be added to Gran Turismo 7.
In a blog post, Sony says: “After reviewing applications, we’ll select a limited number of finalists to participate in video interviews to learn about them and their connection to PlayStation. From there, one PlayStation fan will be selected to be featured in Gran Turismo 7 as part of The Playerbase, where they will have a special limited-time appearance as an in-game character portrait, similar to how characters are presented throughout the game.
“The selected fan will also help design a custom Fantasy Logo and a one-of-a-kind vehicle livery which will be added permanently to the Showcase menu. They will be invited to a visual arts studio in Los Angeles for a scanning day and to collaborate with a designer to create their Fantasy Logo and vehicle livery.”
For now it’s only one gamer who’ll get the honour of being an in-game character, but Sony plans to extent the programme to other games in the near future. Sony says it’s a way to say “thank you” to its most passionate gamers.
The post adds: “Over time, we look forward to expanding The Playerbase as additional PlayStation Studios participate, having fans featured in ways that fit each game’s own style and world. Stay tuned for more updates.”
It’ll be interesting to see what games Sony selects for the process next. Gamers are used to being able to build a protagonist in their likeness for certain games, but being scanned in entirely? That’s a new level of cool.
