JBL’s excellent Xtreme and Go Bluetooth speakers just got a major update

JBL is upgrading its top-rated Bluetooth speakers with the Xtreme 5 and Go 5 landing today and packing major improvements.

The larger Xtreme 5 model is the follow on from the fourth-generation model and is a “noticeable upgrade” according to the audio manufacturers. There’s 10% boost to bass performance, while sound is lower overall. Internals have been revamped with a dual tweeter and a subwoofer now doing the heavy lifting, while minimising distortion at higher volumes.

There’s also a new AI-powered SmartEQ Mode that “automatically adapts sound settings to optimise for music or speech – so you’ll always get the best experience, whether you’re catching up on the latest podcast eps or listening to your favourite playlist.” This model costs £330 and is available from April.

The JBL Go 5, which exists at the other end of the expense spectrum, costs £30, also provides a 10% boost to loudness and deeper bass. There’s also new and easier AirTouch pairing by tapping the two speakers together. Battery life has been boosted to eight hours with a further two more available through a Playtime Boost EQ setting.

The company is also launching some new EasySing mic that will “transform PartyBox speakers into instant karaoke machines.” The AI Voice Removal tech will let you take away the lead singer (or just turn them down) while also offering a range of vocal effects. This is out now and costs £130.
